Africa Takes Centre Stage in iGaming
Demographic and technological growth in Africa is driving interest in the iGaming sector as operators seek to capitalise on unique market opportunities.

Africa is rapidly rising in priority for the iGaming sector, presenting a significant opportunity for operators. Those who are not present in this market risk missing out on one of the most promising expansions. The demographic and technological momentum serves as a strong growth driver, but barriers such as money movement present significant challenges.
Super Group: A Giant in Africa
Super Group, operating primarily as Betway, is the leading operator on the continent and is present in at least eight African countries. Its strong presence in South Africa and its backing on the New York Stock Exchange bolster its competitiveness. While it performs well in various regions, it still faces challenges in giant markets like Nigeria and Kenya.
Regulatory and Expansion Challenges
One of the key challenges is stringent compliance with fiscal and legal regulations, an unavoidable requirement to maintain investor trust and facilitate future sales, potentially to companies like Flutter Entertainment. Moreover, launching from scratch in markets already dominated by big players is complicated.
Opportunities in Secondary Markets
In light of difficulties in markets like South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya, attention is shifting towards emerging countries such as Zambia, Angola, Tanzania, and Mozambique. These offer attractive regulatory frameworks and an established gaming culture, although they still present entry challenges.
Acquisition Strategies
Acquisitions are emerging as a key strategy for entering new territories. This requires operators to demonstrate solid compliance in financial and regulatory areas, which is crucial for navigating due diligence.
Challenges for Buyers
Identifying significant acquisition targets is an additional challenge. While Super Group stands out, other options like betPawa or SportyBet have not made significant strides in transaction terms. BetKing, part of the Canal+ group, could represent an attractive opportunity due to its presence in multiple markets.
The iGaming sector in Africa promises notable growth, and operators who address these challenges will have the advantage of capitalising on an expanding region.
