Rank Evaluates Closure of Grosvenor Casino in Reading Central

Rank Group, a British operator, has initiated a consultation process to decide the future of Grosvenor Casino Reading Central. This venue has generated losses of £500,000 in the last fiscal year, and further losses of £400,000 are anticipated in the upcoming year.

Consultations on the Future of the Casino

A spokesperson for Grosvenor Casinos indicated that they have made the difficult decision to initiate a consultation process to assess long-term sustainability options for the casino. The company regularly reviews the performance of its venues as part of its responsible business practices. According to the spokesperson, they are working closely with team members in Reading South to keep them informed throughout the process.

Financial Performance of the Venue

Rank Group informed its employees on July 20 about the proposal to close the venue on Queen Street, owned by Grosvenor Casinos. Revenues at this location were £630,000 below budget, representing a 19% decrease. Over the past six years, the casino has accumulated losses of £2.3 million. Additionally, operating costs increased by 2% over the last eight years, while revenues dropped by 20%.

The company’s statement highlighted the ongoing financial difficulties that make the operation of the venue unsustainable.

"Therefore, having considered all available options, the company proposes the permanent closure of Reading Central. The proposal has not been made lightly," the company stated.

Closure and Restructuring Strategy

The closure is considered necessary to mitigate financial losses and protect the overall health of the business, allowing resources to be focused on areas with better business prospects. Rank seeks feedback on how to avoid or reduce layoffs and mitigate the impact on affected employees.

The closure of Reading Central could redirect investments towards areas with greater long-term growth potential. Grosvenor still operates two other casinos in the area, offering a potential realignment of resources.

Impact of the Closure on Staff

The process includes listening to staff feedback and seeking ways to minimize potential layoffs, addressing the impact on employees. The approach focuses on handling this process with sensitivity and corporate responsibility.

These decisions reflect the necessity to maintain viability in a challenging business environment.
