Hollywood Casino Aurora Doubles Revenue After Land-Based Move

The shift from riverboat to land-based operations has significantly boosted the Hollywood Casino Aurora in Illinois. Within its first full month since opening on June 24, the casino generated $17.4 million in revenue and drew nearly 156,000 visitors, ranking as the third-highest earner among the state's 17 casinos for July.

Successful Transition to Land

Jay Snowden, CEO and President of Penn Entertainment, highlighted that the Aurora venue has nearly doubled its business. "Key performance indicators show substantial increases, approximately doubling admissions, slot volumes, table volumes, and non-gaming revenues," stated Snowden. The venue is attracting higher-value customers, with rated guests producing a 21% higher average daily worth compared to previous figures.

New and Returning Customers

This strategic move has not only boosted revenues but also expanded the casino's customer base. Since reopening, 20% of guests at Hollywood Casino Aurora are newcomers, while 25% are reactivated customers. This demonstrates the property's growing market reach and appeal.

Upcoming Developments

Following Aurora’s success, Penn Entertainment plans to relocate Hollywood Council Bluffs, with an anticipated opening in 2028. This project involves transforming an original riverboat casino into a modern land-based facility. The new design will connect seamlessly to the existing 444-room hotel, aiming to fortify its market position in the Omaha region with a projected budget of $180 million to $200 million.

"We believe the new property will greatly enhance our competitive positioning in the greater Omaha market," Snowden added.

Both the Aurora and upcoming Council Bluffs projects reflect Penn Entertainment's strategy to modernize and expand its facilities. The design for Council Bluffs is slated to resemble that of the Hollywood Joliet, indicating a consistent approach in upgrading their casino offerings.
