Coinbase Prepares Bitcoin for Quantum Computing Threat
Coinbase takes steps to fortify crypto infrastructure against future quantum computing risks, stressing collaboration across the blockchain ecosystem.

Coinbase is taking proactive steps to safeguard its cryptocurrency infrastructure against the potential threats posed by quantum computing. Quantum computing, utilizing qubits, could compromise blockchain security by cracking public-key cryptography, thus exposing private keys. While the immediate threat isn't clear, Coinbase emphasizes the necessity of preparation.
"A large-scale quantum computer capable of breaking current cryptography will eventually be built. No one knows exactly when. But the work to prepare needs to start now, not when it’s urgent," Coinbase stated. To this end, the company is enhancing its key management infrastructure to integrate post-quantum cryptography.
Upgrading Key Management Systems
Coinbase is undertaking specific initiatives to ensure quantum readiness, notably upgrading its existing CoreKMS system, which safeguards approximately 99.9% of its custodied assets using multi-party computation technology. This ensures private keys remain secure. The exchange is developing PQ-CoreKMS, a post-quantum version designed for future threats.
This development follows studies by an Independent Advisory Board on Quantum Computing and Blockchain, formed by Coinbase in January 2026. Brian Armstrong, Co-founder and CEO of Coinbase, highlighted, "Quantum computers could have implications for blockchain/crypto. We are honoured to bring together distinguished researchers to ensure this is being properly considered."
Board members include notable figures such as Professor Scott Aaronson, a prominent quantum computing theorist, and Professor Dan Boneh, a key figure in modern cryptography.
Collaborative Efforts in the Blockchain Ecosystem
Besides upgrading its infrastructure, Coinbase emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts within the blockchain community. The company is organizing working sessions with Bitcoin developers, cryptographers, and researchers, including Stanford University, to explore potential migration strategies.
The decentralized nature of Bitcoin poses challenges for implementing significant security upgrades as it requires coordinated efforts spanning developers, companies, and users. Moreover, Coinbase has joined the Bitcoin Security Consortium, collaborating with firms like BlackRock and Fidelity Digital Assets to promote quantum-related security proposals.
Challenges and Strategies for Migration
The main challenge ahead is upgrading systems without compromising current security measures. The advisory board expressed confidence that a fault-tolerant quantum computer will be built eventually, but mentioned the importance of existing standards in developing protective measures.
Coinbase believes that collaboration is the key: "No one company can solve this alone. The only way through is together: researchers, developers, protocols, and companies all moving in the same direction," the company stated. This cooperative approach is essential to protect the future of blockchain against quantum threats.
