Coinbase is strengthening its cryptocurrency infrastructure in light of the potential risk posed by quantum computing, an emerging technology that could compromise blockchain security by breaking public key cryptography. Although quantum computers capable of such risk do not yet exist, the uncertainty surrounding their arrival underscores the need for preparations now.

The company has launched several initiatives to anticipate quantum changes, highlighting the upgrade of its key management infrastructure to support post-quantum cryptography. Currently, its CoreKMS system protects 99.9% of the assets it holds, utilizing multiparty computation technology to ensure that private keys cannot be reconstructed by a single entity. To confront future threats, Coinbase is developing PQ-CoreKMS, a post-quantum version of the system.

Research with the Advisory Council

In January 2026, Coinbase established the Independent Advisory Council on Quantum Computing and Blockchain to explore the potential risks of this technology. Notable members of the council include Scott Aaronson, a prominent theoretical quantum computing researcher, and Dan Boneh, a key figure in modern cryptography. Brian Armstrong, co-founder and CEO of Coinbase, emphasized the importance of considering and preparing for the impact of quantum computing on blockchain and cryptocurrencies.

"It is important that we think and prepare. We are honored to bring together some of the most distinguished researchers in quantum computing, cryptography, and blockchain systems," said Armstrong.

Challenges and Necessary Collaborations

Preparing Bitcoin for a quantum future is not a task for a single company. Collaboration within the blockchain ecosystem is required. Coinbase has initiated working sessions with Bitcoin developers, cryptographers, researchers, and Stanford University to discuss migration strategies. The decentralized structure of Bitcoin complicates significant security updates, requiring coordination among developers, companies, and users.

Bitcoin Security Consortium

Coinbase is a founding member of the Bitcoin Security Consortium, working alongside companies such as BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets, Block, and Blockstream. Through this initiative, Coinbase will fund developers working on Bitcoin security proposals related to quantum technologies and will contribute engineering resources to open-source efforts.

"No company can solve this alone. The only way is together: researchers, developers, protocols, and companies moving in the same direction," asserted Coinbase.

This joint effort aims to address the challenges posed by migrating to systems that incorporate quantum protections without compromising the current security of networks.
