Oddschecker Confirms Cybersecurity Breach Affecting User Data

The company Oddschecker has acknowledged a "cybersecurity incident" that has compromised user data, including contact details and dates of birth. In an email sent to Oddschecker users, the brand, owned by FairPlay Sports Media, stated that it has worked with a leading team of external IT specialists to swiftly close the incident and report it to the relevant authorities.

Oddschecker assured that it has implemented "additional preventive security measures," asking account holders to update their passwords. Although it has not identified evidence that customer details have been used in phishing scams, it warned users about potential attacks.

The company has not disclosed further details about the breach. The email sent to consumers stated: "We are reaching out to inform you that we have recently identified and contained a cybersecurity incident involving user data, including your contact details and date of birth." It also mentioned: "We thank you in advance for your support. Unfortunately, such incidents are becoming increasingly common in today’s digital world and affect organizations across all sectors. We will learn from this experience and share any relevant lessons with our partners to ensure we all come out of this stronger."

Some users have posted the message on X, tagging the official Oddschecker account to verify the authenticity of the email.

Security Measures

Following the incident, Oddschecker implemented several security measures. Beyond the password update requested from users, monitoring of suspicious activity has been intensified to prevent future unauthorized access. Additionally, they continue to collaborate with technology experts to strengthen their infrastructure.

Market Reaction

Oddschecker is primarily known for its odds comparison tool, which analyzes prices in the UK from 24 bookmakers and two exchanges. FairPlay Sports Media, which also owns SuperScommesse, WhoScored, the AI sports prediction platform Quarter4 —now rebranded as FairPlay AI— and Confido, has assured that its global operations have not been interrupted.

In 2021, Bruin Capital acquired Oddschecker Global Media from Flutter in a transaction valued at up to £155 million.

Context of Cyber Breaches

This incident comes after the report from the charity Gambling with Lives, which was also affected by a security breach in its CRM provider, Beacon. The latter manages over 1,500 clients, primarily from the charity sector.

A spokesperson from FairPlay Sports Media commented: "We recently identified, contained, and resolved a cybersecurity incident that involved a limited part of our systems. This did not interrupt our usual services and we continue to operate normally. We are working closely with our users, partners, and the relevant authorities."
