Oddschecker Confirms User Data Breach, Tightens Security

Oddschecker, owned by FairPlay Sports Media, has confirmed a cybersecurity breach involving user data. The breach accessed contact details and dates of birth, though no evidence suggests these were used in phishing attacks. Users have been advised to remain alert for potential scams.

Incident Details and Response

Oddschecker informed users of the breach via email, acknowledging access to specific user data. The company enlisted external IT specialists to swiftly address the issue and reported it to relevant authorities. "We’re contacting you to let you know we recently identified and contained an IT security incident involving user data," stated the email to customers.

Enhanced Security Measures

In response, Oddschecker has implemented new security measures. Users have been prompted to update their passwords as a precautionary step. Furthermore, FairPlay Sports Media, which owns Oddschecker, emphasized their commitment to learning from this incident to bolster their cybersecurity framework.

FairPlay Sports Media's Broader Ecosystem

FairPlay Sports Media's portfolio includes several brands such as Italy-focused SuperScommesse, WhoScored, and AI sports forecasting platform Quarter4, now rebranded to FairPlay AI. Oddschecker is renowned for its odds comparison service in the UK, collaborating with 24 bookmakers and two betting exchanges. Reflecting on past ownership changes, Bruin Capital acquired Oddschecker Global Media from Flutter in 2021 for up to £155 million.

Context and Industry Concerns

This data breach at Oddschecker follows another incident involving the charity Gambling with Lives, which suffered a data leak at its CRM supplier, Beacon. This breach affected donor and engagement records, highlighting growing security concerns in the sector.

Official Response and Communication

FairPlay Sports Media clarified: "We recently identified, contained, and resolved an IT security incident involving a limited part of our systems." They assured stakeholders that usual services remain unaffected while maintaining dialogue with users, partners, and authorities.

Stakeholders continue to engage on social media platforms like X, seeking confirmation of communications’ authenticity with the official Oddschecker account. This transparency aligns with FairPlay's pledge to share insights and strengthen industry-wide data protection standards.
