The CMA Releases Responses on Apple’s Mobile Platform
The UK Competition and Markets Authority reviews NFC access and conduct rules in iOS. It ensures Apple’s commitments to improve interoperability in the UK.

The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has released responses to its inquiry regarding the conduct requirements for Apple’s mobile platform. This move is part of a broader review concerning access to the iOS system features, including access to NFC.
Review of NFC Access in iOS
On June 30, 2026, the CMA issued a call for evidence regarding NFC access in iOS. This inquiry process aims to better understand Apple’s practices concerning the control of hardware features like NFC, which is crucial for apps that rely on these technologies.
The goal is to assess whether current restrictions limit competition or innovation in the market. According to discussions with developers, limited access to NFC may present an obstacle.
Commitments Proposed by Apple
In April 2026, Apple presented final commitments to enhance the interoperability of its system. This includes allowing developers to request interoperable access to functional features of iOS. The CMA issued a press release highlighting these commitments, which also encompass app reviews and ratings.
"Improved interoperability is essential to foster a fair and competitive app ecosystem," stated a CMA spokesperson.
Designation as a Strategic Market Status
The CMA decided in October 2025 to designate Apple with a Strategic Market Status (SMS) concerning its mobile platform. This classification acknowledges Apple’s dominance in mobile operating systems, app distribution, and browsers.
The decision followed a lengthy consultative process that began in January 2025, including an invitation for commentary on the investigation and potential future measures.
Roadmap and Future Interventions
On July 23, 2025, the CMA published a roadmap for intervening in Apple’s mobile platform. The roadmap outlines possible measures to enhance competition, which could be implemented if Apple retains its SMS designation.
Comments were invited to define priorities in these interventions. The consultation closed in August 2025, leading to further analysis in the following months.
Results of Consultations and Workshops
In 2025, the CMA organized a workshop for app developers, allowing them to voice their opinions on innovation and the barriers they face in developing for mobile platforms. This and other commitments continue to shape the CMA's agenda in its analysis of Apple.
"It is crucial that access barriers do not hinder future innovation," expressed Sarah Cardell, Chief Executive of the CMA, during a conference in March 2025.
The CMA continues to collaborate with stakeholders, ensuring that the proposed interventions enhance market competitiveness.
