ESMA Authorises EuroCTP as Consolidated Tape Provider
EuroCTP to enhance EU equity market transparency as the designated provider for shares and ETFs, starting operations after September 2026.

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has officially authorised EuroCTP B.V. as the Consolidated Tape Provider (CTP) for shares and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). This marks a significant development in bolstering transparency and efficiency within EU equity markets. EuroCTP will compile pre-trade and post-trade data into a single stream, providing market participants with a comprehensive view of trading activities.
Key Milestones in Implementation
ESMA's authorisation allows EuroCTP a transitional period concluding on 30 September 2026. This interval is dedicated to finalising the necessary operational and technical setups. Upon completing this phase, EuroCTP will assume responsibility for the consolidated tape operations for a five-year term, adhering to the Markets in Financial Instruments Regulation (MiFIR) framework. The start of this period will coincide with EuroCTP beginning its operational duties.
Benefits for Market Participants
According to Natasha Cazenave, ESMA’s Executive Director, this authorisation "strengthens the transparency and efficiency of EU equity capital markets." By integrating data from multiple contributors, EuroCTP will support better price discovery and facilitate informed investment decisions for EU and international stakeholders. Retail investors, academics, civil society organisations, and regulators will gain complimentary access to this data, while other users can acquire it for a reasonable fee for internal and client use.
Encouraging Stakeholder Engagement
ESMA advises data contributors and market participants to actively engage with EuroCTP to ensure a smooth launch of the consolidated tape activities. This engagement is crucial for achieving timely and effective market integration.
EuroCTP's role as the CTP will be under ESMA’s direct oversight, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. This framework not only aims to enhance market transparency but also aligns with the goals of the Savings and Investments Union.
Looking Ahead
ESMA's strategic initiative underscores the importance of cooperation between regulators and market participants to foster an efficient trading environment. EuroCTP’s deployment will create a unified data stream fostering informed decision-making, an essential component for robust market operations.
