Everton Player Charged with Violating FA Betting Rules

Martin Sherif, a graduate of the Everton Academy, has been charged with violating the betting rules of the Football Association (FA) after allegedly placing 61 bets on football matches over a span of 15 months. Sherif, born in Liberia, has yet to make his first-team debut for Everton. Instead, he has been on loan at Rotherham United and Port Vale during the last two seasons. He now has until August 17 to respond to the charges against him.

Changes to FA Betting Rules

Until 2014, football players in England were allowed to bet on matches or competitions in which they were not participating or could not influence. However, in August of that year, the FA revised the rules, prohibiting all players in the top eight divisions of English football from betting on any matches in the sport globally.

Other High-Profile Cases

Sherif's case is not isolated. Last year, former West Ham midfielder Lucas Paquetá was cleared of betting violations following an FA investigation after being charged with six offenses in 2024. Additionally, Neil Danns, manager of Southport FC, was fined £1,000 and received a six-month ban, while Ryan Bowman, former forward for Cheltenham Town, was handed a 42-month sanction for serious violations between 2015 and 2023.

In an international context, former Brentford forward Ivan Toney received an eight-month suspension and a £50,000 fine in 2023. In Italy, Sandro Tonali was punished with a 10-month ban for similar offenses.

International Betting Cases

In other sports, former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit electronic fraud in an illegal betting scheme, resulting in a lifetime ban from the NBA in 2024. Similarly, Tucupita Marcano, pitcher for the San Diego Padres, faced the same punishment for violating Major League Baseball's betting policy.

In Major League Soccer (MLS), former players Yaw Yeboah and Derrick Jones were banned for life for betting on their team, Columbus Crew, during 2024 and 2025. Sherif's situation comes just five months after this incident.

The FA has not provided further details on the specific bets made by Sherif. In addition to representing the Netherlands at youth levels, Sherif scored four goals in League One last season. Focus will now be on how he responds to these allegations in the coming days.
