Launch of the African Responsible Gaming Network to Enhance Player Protection

The African Responsible Gaming Network (ARGN) has been officially launched as a continental response to the risks and harms associated with gaming in Africa. This new alliance brings together entities from South Africa, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Malawi, Botswana, Namibia, Cameroon, Uganda, Eswatini, and Austria, and seeks to strengthen player protection and harm prevention at a pan-African level through cooperation and shared knowledge.

The Emergence of ARGN in an Expanding Industry

The formation of ARGN coincides with a period of rapid growth in both online and land-based gaming markets in Africa, driven by digital connectivity, the widespread adoption of mobile technology, and increased access to betting platforms. While these trends view gaming as a source of economic opportunities, organizations and specialists warn of a rising incidence of gaming-related harm, addiction, low player protection, and inadequate support structures – particularly notable in several African countries.

Before ARGN, responses to these challenges were limited to disconnected national initiatives developed within their own regulatory frameworks and without continental coordination. The launch of ARGN represents a strategic shift: to create a community of African practice capable of articulating joint actions, sharing experiences, and establishing common protection standards.

Priorities of the African Responsible Gaming Network

The Network defines four fundamental strategic lines to structure and guide its initial actions:

• Preparation of an African report on gaming-related harm, collecting research, trends, and relevant data from all participating countries.
• Creation of a directory of treatment, recovery, and support services accessible in African countries.
• Development of public policy recommendations and practical proposals for regulators and policymakers regarding responsible gaming.
• Organization of replicable prevention and awareness campaigns in various jurisdictions.

With this approach, ARGN seeks to adapt to the transboundary and digital nature of current gaming in Africa and provide concrete tools to support sector stakeholders and authorities.

Participation, Presidency, and Goals of ARGN

Among the founding organizations of ARGN are Gamble Aware Nigeria, Gamble Pause Initiative Africa, and South African Responsible Gambling Foundation, whose activities have contributed to articulating the new network and enhancing synergies among national initiatives.

In the leadership of the alliance, Lebo Seoheng, Director of Advocacy and Communication at South African Responsible Gambling Foundation, has been appointed President of ARGN and will be responsible for guiding its evolution and overall strategy.

“The African igaming market is growing rapidly, and as online and sports betting gain continental share, it is essential that player protection and responsible gaming remain the core of operation and regulation, to create a safer environment through effective legislation and reduce harm, addictions, and pressure on African health systems,” Seoheng stated.

Towards Coordinated Standards of Responsible Gaming and Protection in Africa

The ARGN platform emerges to strengthen the collective voice of the continent regarding player protection, prevention, and management of gaming harm, and the promotion of better practices in responsible gaming. Its members will work together to:

• Share evidence and recent research on behaviors and regional trends.
• Develop common approaches that adapt to diverse regulatory scenarios.
• Enhance interaction with regulators, public administrations, and international stakeholders.
• Facilitate access to relevant services and information for those affected by gaming.

ARGN aims to serve as a meeting point for organizations, specialists, and operators who wish to move toward more effective prevention and commonly aligned programs in mental health and gaming-related addictions.

Role and Outlook of Founding Members

Gamble Aware Nigeria, Gamble Pause Initiative Africa, and South African Responsible Gambling Foundation will coordinate efforts to reinforce existing responsible gaming programs, expand research projects, and broaden the coverage of educational and awareness initiatives in Africa.

ARGN hopes to establish itself as a reference point for the coordination of continental campaigns, the development of new player protection strategies, and the adoption of more informed and participatory public policies. The collaborative focus of the Network aims to place player well-being at the center of the evolving gaming market, both in its digital and land-based forms.
