The FCA Recovers Funds for John Burford Fraud Victims
The FCA recovers nearly all the money defrauded from the victims of con artist John Burford, thanks to a confiscation order.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has secured the recovery of most of the money invested by the victims of convicted con artist John Burford. In September 2025, Burford, aged 86, was sentenced to two years in prison for defrauding more than 100 investors of over £1 million. He promised trading alerts and opportunities in ‘managed’ funds without having FCA authorization.
Court Outcomes and Confiscation Order
At a hearing at Southwark Crown Court on July 27, 2026, Burford was ordered to pay £655,951.40. This amount represents the total assets the court determined were available for recovery. The funds will be returned directly to the victims of his crimes. Along with previous payments made by Burford to investors, almost all originally invested money will be refunded, estimated at 99%.
FCA Statements and Additional Measures
Steve Smart, Executive Director of Enforcement and Market Oversight at the FCA, stated: > "Burford deceived investors to fund his lavish lifestyle. Recovering the stolen money and returning it to the victims sends a clear message that crime does not pay." If Burford does not pay the confiscation order within three months, he faces further prison time of up to five years for non-compliance.
Legal Context and Confiscation Procedures
Confiscation procedures are part of the FCA’s ongoing work to deprive criminals of the benefits of their crimes and recover money for fraud victims. Confiscation orders are made under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 and require criminals to return the benefit gained from their criminal conduct or the value of their available assets, whichever is lower.
