The Grandstand CEO Affirms SEO Remains Relevant
Kevin McCrystle, CEO of Grandstand, reaffirms the continuity of SEO but emphasizes diversifying strategies beyond organic search marketing.

Kevin McCrystle, co-founder and CEO of Grandstand, asserts that SEO is not going to disappear, although the company will focus on diversifying its strategies to avoid relying solely on organic search marketing. These statements were made during the company's earnings call on Nasdaq, on Thursday, August 13. When asked about spam in international markets, McCrystle noted that Google is improving its management of it.
Regulatory Challenges and the Impact on SEO
McCrystle indicated that the regulatory environment in some countries, such as the United Kingdom, has not been favorable for SEO-focused businesses, mentioning a 15% drop in CPA. However, he highlighted growth in the North American market, where marketing, including SEO, has increased significantly.
Diversification Strategies
Grandstand is focusing on diversifying its channels by developing direct relationships with users to sell subscriptions, financial products, tickets, among others, and also cross-selling on affiliate platforms. This strategy aims to reduce the impact of future Google updates.
Pressures on SEO Strategies
SEO strategies face pressure due to the rise of zero-click search results and large language models. Manuel Stan from Catena Media mentioned the need to reduce dependence on SEO.
Financial Results and Outlook
In the second quarter, Grandstand reported revenues of $37.8 million, a year-over-year decrease of 5%, due to growth in data revenues but a drop in marketing income. Adjusted EBITDA plummeted 44%, standing at $7.7 million, with a margin of 20%. Gross profit fell 14% year-over-year to $31.8 million. Grandstand maintains its full-year forecast of between $165 million and $170 million in revenues, and adjusted EBITDA of $45 million to $50 million. Last month, the company changed its name from Gambling.com Group to Grandstand.
