YouTube Launches Affiliate Program in the UK

YouTube has launched its Affiliate Shopping Program in the UK, allowing eligible creators to tag products from major retailers like Boots, Currys, and Marks & Spencer within videos, Shorts, and live streams. Awin supports the program, connecting creator content with product discovery and closer affiliate attribution. Creators can earn commissions on qualifying purchases, while retailers access a performance-based path for collaboration with video creators.

Launch of YouTube Affiliate Program in the UK

The program started with seven major retailers covering various e-commerce categories:

  • Boots: Health and beauty
  • Currys: Consumer technology and appliances
  • Debenhams: Fashion, beauty, and home goods
  • Etsy: Independent and handmade products
  • Marks & Spencer: Fashion, beauty, and home goods
  • Next: Fashion and home goods
  • Wayfair: Furniture and home products

Alison Lomax, Managing Director of YouTube UK, confirmed the launch and highlighted the opportunities for creators to tag products within their content, allowing viewers to "shop directly from creators they trust."

How the YouTube Affiliate Shopping Program Works

The program allows creators to connect products directly with their YouTube content:

  • Product Selection and Tagging: Eligible creators can search for and add relevant tags when uploading or editing content in YouTube Studio.
  • Products in the Viewing Experience: Long videos may show a shopping button, while Shorts can include product stickers. Live streams may display products alongside live content.
  • Viewer Navigation: Viewers can open product information and follow the link to the participating retailer while keeping the video active as they browse available products.
  • Performance Tracking: YouTube Studio provides insights on clicks, sales, and affiliate revenue. Creators can review participating vendors, commission offers, and promotions in the Affiliate Hub.

Impact for Retail Partnerships

YouTube's launch in the UK provides affiliate teams with a more direct pathway to connect retail programs with creator-led video content. In collaboration with Awin, management of tracking, reporting, and payments is streamlined, integrating established affiliate infrastructure.

Lower Subscriber Threshold

This expansion follows YouTube's decision in March to reduce the minimum subscriber requirement for the program from 1,000 to 500. This allowed smaller and niche creators to enter. However, reaching 500 subscribers does not guarantee automatic access; acceptance into the YouTube Partner Program and meeting broader eligibility criteria are still required.

YouTube and Native Affiliate Commerce

The launch in the UK positions YouTube alongside other platforms developing affiliate tools integrated into the content experience. For example, Instagram has reintroduced commission-based product tagging in Reels. The advantage of YouTube lies in the variety of formats that support detailed reviews, tutorials, live streams, and short recommendations.

The effectiveness of the launch will depend on retailer participation, commission rates, product availability, and the ability to reliably report conversions through YouTube and Awin. Overall, the launch shows that affiliate shopping is becoming a core part of the YouTube content experience rather than a separate feature.
