YouTube Launches Affiliate Store Program in the UK
YouTube implements the Shopping Affiliate Program in the UK, enabling content creators to earn rewards for purchases through their recommendations.

YouTube has launched its Shopping Affiliate Program in the UK, giving creators the ability to add product tags from major retailers directly within videos, Shorts, and live streams. Initial launch participants include retailers like Boots, Currys, Debenhams, Etsy, Marks & Spencer, Next, and Wayfair. The program is supported by Awin as the affiliate platform. Content creators can earn commissions from qualifying purchases, while retailers gain an additional channel for engagement with video creators.
Key Features of the Program
Through the Shopping Affiliate Program, content creators can link products directly to their YouTube videos. Participants can select and tag products during video uploads or when editing existing content in YouTube Studio. Long videos may include a shopping button, while Shorts can feature product stickers.
Viewers can navigate to the retailer's website by opening the product information and following the link. The video remains active while they explore available products. YouTube Studio allows tracking of clicks, sales, and affiliate revenue. Commissions vary based on the terms set by each retailer.
YouTube also offers automatic tag addition. By enabling this feature, the system can recognize products in videos and add the relevant tags.
Access Levels for Creators
This initiative follows YouTube's decision in March to reduce the minimum subscriber count for program participation from 1,000 to 500. However, access is not granted automatically; participants must meet the eligibility requirements of the YouTube Partner Program.
Channels with an audience defined as 'For Kids', or those featuring a majority of such videos, are not eligible. Music channels and official artist channels are also excluded.
The Role of Awin and Retailers
Awin's participation links the program's implementation with existing affiliate infrastructure, simplifying the management of tracking, reporting, and payments. The program provides affiliate sales teams with a new way to connect retail programs with video content.
YouTube's Position Among Other Platforms
YouTube is following the trend of integrating affiliate marketing into content. Meta offers Facebook Affiliate Partnerships, allowing creators to link product recommendations with retailers' marketplaces and catalogs. Instagram has restored commission tags for products in Reels, while eBay added support for Live Shopping in July.
Significance for YouTube Shopping
The initial launch tests how effectively YouTube can combine existing programs with creator-generated content. Its success hinges on retailer participation, commission terms, product availability, and reliable reporting.
The launch demonstrates that affiliate marketing is becoming a part of YouTube's core content strategy rather than just a standalone feature. Its success will largely depend on retailer engagement and the reliability of the conversion system.
