Flutter's Pursuit of Lottomatica's Leadership in Italy

Lottomatica remains a leader in Italy's online gaming market, but Flutter Entertainment is positioned to challenge this dominance with its brands Sisal and SNAI. According to Jefferies, Lottomatica held 30% of Italian online GGR in Q1, while Flutter trailed closely at 27%. The strategic acquisition of SNAI and Sisal could propel Flutter past Lottomatica if it recovers market share losses in recent years.

Flutter's Strategy in the Italian Market

Flutter's past actions provide a roadmap for its strategy in Italy. Since acquiring Sisal in August 2022, Flutter increased the brand’s online GGR share significantly. However, SNAI's market share has decreased by about four percentage points recently. "Flutter boasts a track record of gaining the leading market share in almost every targeted territory," noted Jefferies, highlighting Italy’s potential shift in market share.

Recent developments saw CEO Peter Jackson announcing "exceptional levels of growth" in Italy across sportsbook and iGaming. Flutter recently completed migrating SNAI onto its platform, overcoming initial disruptions. "Performance recovered strongly in June," Jackson said, indicating a potential market-share rebound, particularly during the World Cup.

The Competitive Landscape

Italy’s market context is indeed promising, with a projected GGR of €22.6 billion by 2025 and only 28% online penetration compared to the UK's 61%. A 9% CAGR for online GGR from 2025 to 2030 underscores growth potential. Meanwhile, advertising regulations and a new concession regime, reducing licences from 81 to 52, favor larger operators with strong brand presence.

Flutter’s Competitive Edge

Under Flutter's ownership, Sisal's online growth has outpaced Lottomatica, with SNAI enhancing retail scale. Jefferies estimated this acquisition lifted Flutter's online GGR from 20% to 27%. Flutter is leveraging global strengths to capitalize on this synergy, bolstering its position in the Italian market.

Lottomatica's Stronghold

Despite Flutter’s advances, Lottomatica’s defensive measures remain robust. CEO Guglielmo Angelozzi reported a 12% online market growth in Q2, with gains accelerated to 19% by June. "In a mix of organic growth and M&A, we’ve gone from a marginal operator to the largest operator in the market," Angelozzi stated.

Lottomatica’s high profitability, featuring a 58% EBITDA margin in H1, comes with strategic restraint, using disciplined promotions as described by CFO Laurence Van Lancker. They stress "profitable growth," suggesting quality over quantity when acquiring market share. This could set the stage for a strategic battle.

The Path Forward

Jefferies presents a clear pathway for Flutter: replicate Sisal's success with SNAI. The company does not need to invent new strategies but rather employ proven approaches. The potential shift in Italian market dynamics centers around competition between these two industry giants.

Evaluating each move from Flutter and Lottomatica with strategic precision will be crucial for stakeholders betting on Italy’s lucrative market. Future quarters are likely to reveal more about who will take the longer lead.
