Ignition Casino Study: Rhode Island is the Luckiest State in the U.S.

Rhode Island has been ranked as the luckiest state in the United States according to a new study by Ignition Casino, with New Jersey and New York closely following. The East Coast states dominate the top positions in the operator's index. Ignition Casino explained that its scoring model combines four weighted parameters for a total of 100 points: "winnings" in the lottery (40 points, considering Powerball winners since 1992 and Mega Millions winners since 1996 per million residents), access to "games" (30 points, based on casinos per state and casino population density), "anomalies" (20 points, considering weather-related loss events of over $1 billion since 1980, in addition to injuries and deaths related to weather in the last 10 years), and "superstitions" (10 points, using Google Trends scores for "lucky charms", "horoscopes", and "winning the lottery").

Methodology and Results

In the overall table, Rhode Island received a score of 58.7, followed by New Jersey with 56.5 and New York with 54.9. Michigan and Delaware tied with 54.3, while Ohio (50.6), South Dakota (49.8), and Maryland (49.0) complete the top eight. At the other end, the study ranked Hawaii as the "least lucky" state with a total luck score of 5.2, followed by Utah (7.4) and Tennessee (9.9). Texas also ranked among the bottom five with an 11.4, influenced by a low "games" score of 1.2 and "anomalies" score of 1.1 according to the operator's methodology.

Access to Games and Anomalies

The component tables highlight how different factors influence the results. New Jersey led the "winnings" category with a score of 21.6, while Nevada topped the "games" category with 29.9, based on its 231 casinos and a density of 13,439.9 people per casino. Connecticut led the "anomalies" category with 12.2, while Wyoming excelled in the measure of "superstitions" with a score of 7.9.
