Cardinals Executive to Appeal NFL Betting Suspension

Ryan Gold, director of college scouting for the Arizona Cardinals, has denied any wrongdoing after being suspended by the NFL for violating the league's betting policy. The NFL announced his indefinite suspension after determining that he leaked non-public information regarding the selections for the 2026 Draft of the Cardinals. However, Mike Caspino, Gold's attorney, maintains that these allegations are "completely false." It is still unknown who received the draft information from Gold or if anyone associated with this person made bets based on that information.

"We have requested an appeal and hope to clear his name," Caspino told ESPN.

Draft and New Additions

After cutting veteran quarterback Kyler Murray, the Cardinals made significant changes to their offense during the draft. They selected Jeremiyah Love as a running back with the third overall pick and added quarterback Carson Beck. They also strengthened their offensive line with Chase Bisontis and brought in receiver Reggie Virgil. Two days before the draft, Love had odds of +225 at BetMGM to be selected third, only behind David Bailey from Texas Tech.

Betting and Allegations

Caspino claimed that Gold had no knowledge of the exact selections that the Cardinals would make, stating that only owner Michael Bidwill and general manager Monti Ossenfort were aware beforehand. Regarding the betting, Caspino mentioned that Gold's wife made weekly bets of $10 in a group with high school friends, but his client did not participate in these activities. Gold has not yet commented on this matter.

The NFL's policy strictly prohibits league personnel from providing non-public information to third parties related to betting. "While there is no reason to believe that the integrity of any NFL game has been compromised, the league takes any violation of its betting policy very seriously," stated the NFL.

Possible Coalition Among Leagues

Gold's suspension comes shortly after NBA Commissioner Adam Silver suggested forming a coalition with other leagues to establish practices regarding sports integrity. Several leagues are facing cases related to game manipulation and betting. The NFL has not addressed this possible coalition but suspended 10 individuals in 2023 for betting-related issues. Among them was Isaiah Rodgers from the Indianapolis Colts, who placed bets while in the locker room.

Future Prospects

Ryan Gold, who is in his thirteenth season with the Cardinals, became the head of college scouting in 2025. Preseason training for the Cardinals begins on Wednesday.
