India Doubles Presence in Esports World Cup 2026 Chess

India is strengthening its presence in the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026 Chess tournament, showcasing four Grandmasters in Paris from August 11 to 15. This marks a significant increase from last year’s representation. Nihal Sarin, Aravindh Chithambaram, and Pranesh M will compete under the banner of S8UL Esports, while Arjun Erigaisi represents Gen.G Esports.

Prize Pool and Qualification

The EWC Chess event offers a substantial prize pool of USD 1.5 million (approximately INR 14.2 crore). Three Indian players qualified directly to the Group Stage due to their performance in the Champions Chess Tour (CCT) 2025-2026: Nihal Sarin, Pranesh M, and Arjun Erigaisi. Aravindh Chithambaram earned his spot via DreamHack Atlanta, starting in the Play-In stage.

India's previous participation saw Nihal Sarin and Arjun Erigaisi representing the country, with Nihal reaching the quarterfinals and Arjun finishing fourth in 2025, both securing their places through different qualifying routes.

Tournament Format and Structure

The 2026 event introduces a revised format, starting with a Play-In stage featuring nine players who earned spots through the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) and DreamHack Atlanta. This stage operates a double-elimination bracket with two-game matches. Top performers advance to a 16-player Group Stage, divided into two groups of eight, continuing with double-elimination and two-game matches.

The top four from each group will progress to the Playoffs, which are a single-elimination format featuring four-game quarterfinals and six-game semifinals, culminating in a Grand Final played across three sets.

Key Players and Contenders

The field is led by defending champion Magnus Carlsen from Team Liquid. Other notable competitors include Hikaru Nakamura and Alireza Firouzja from Team Falcons, Nodirbek Abdusattorov representing Natus Vincere, and Hans Moke Niemann from GodLike Esports.

India's expanded delegation highlights its growing presence in international chess esports. The combination of seasoned Grandmasters and promising talents indicates a robust competitive spirit against formidable international opponents.
