Most New Yorkers Disapprove of Online Sports Betting
A survey reveals that less than one in four sees the legalization of online gambling in New York positively.

A recent survey from Siena University shows that most New Yorkers consider the legalization of online sports betting in the state to be negative. Although New York has generated significant revenue since this mode began in 2022, there is a clear divide in opinions among different age groups and types of players.
Survey Results
The Siena Research Institute's survey, conducted between July 1 and July 8, 2026, interviewed 814 residents of New York about their perception of the regulated sports betting industry. Only 23% believed that online sports betting is "good for New York." Active players showed greater support, at up to 49%, while only 14% of non-bettors and 16% of those over 50 considered online gambling positive.
"We are observing a generational gap in those who participate and support sports betting," commented Travis Brodbeck, Associate Director of Data Management at Siena University.
Online sports betting was legally initiated in New York on January 8, 2022, and has reached record figures in the country since then.
Financial Impact and Advertising
In the fiscal year 2025/2026, which ended in March, over $26.1 billion was wagered, of which operators retained nearly $2.6 billion. Tax revenues exceeded $1.3 billion, allocated to public education.
Despite the benefit for schools, many New Yorkers disapprove of betting advertisements during televised sporting events. 43% of the general public and 36% of bettors support a ban on ads during these events. Opposition rises to 45% among non-bettors and 50% among those over 50.
Market Growth
Despite concerns over prediction markets, sports betting in New York continues to grow. In the 2025/2026 period, betting volume grew by 9.25% compared to the previous year and gross revenues by 21.2%.
The New York State Gaming Commission and Attorney General Letitia James have warned about prediction market platforms due to the lack of regulations and responsible gambling measures, in addition to not contributing taxes or licenses to the state.
Concerns about Betting
The expansion of online sports betting brings an increase in concerns about consumer safety and social impact. There is still a debate in New York about how to balance tax revenue with responsible gambling.
