The Financial Impact of the World Cup on Betting Operators
The World Cup may represent only 1% of annual revenue for operators, but its real value might lie in customer acquisition.

With the World Cup in its final stage in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, betting operators are assessing whether the tournament met their business expectations. Before it began, Macquarie Group had estimated that global betting could reach $50 billion. However, during Entain's earnings call in March, CEO Stella David questioned the true economic value of such large sporting events.
"It probably represents only 1% of annual revenues," commented David. "It's bigger than the Euros, but not as significant as one might think."
Sporting Events as Customer Acquisition Tools
Ed Birkin of H2 Gambling Capital believes these events are more useful for attracting customers than for generating direct income. In markets that report on this, the World Cup represents around 7% of sports betting volume, depending on the match outcomes. Birkin emphasizes that the impact varies according to each operator's approach to sports.
Unexpected Outcomes
This year's tournament, expanded to 48 teams, resulted in more matches but also in a higher number of matchups between elite teams and debuting selections. Examples like Cape Verde drawing against Spain and Uruguay highlight how outcomes affect operators.
Long-term Value through Casino
Chad Beynon of Macquarie Group suggests that the true value lies in the potential for cross-selling to casinos. Neal Menashe, CEO of Super Group, shared a similar view, noting that between 60% and 70% could come from this strategy.
Challenges in the USA
Birkin doubts that operators in the United States will be able to achieve the desired level of cross-selling due to the lack of iGaming expansion. In this context, only five states allow online casinos.
Bally’s Strategy
Robeson Reeves of Bally’s Intralot commented that their focus is not to overspend during the tournament but rather to focus on acquiring competing clients afterward. Beynon agrees, emphasizing that Bally's prioritizes efficiency in customer acquisition.
Opportunity in North America
Greg Karamitis of DraftKings anticipates that the World Cup will be a significant opportunity to acquire and engage customers, especially considering the tournament is held in North America. DraftKings provides its sports betting experience in Spanish, which is key with Mexico as a co-host.
Impact of Prediction Markets
Prediction markets are emerging as competitors. Birkin believes their impact in Europe will be limited due to regulatory initiatives prohibiting them. In the US, Kalshi, a leader in prediction markets, handled $15 billion in bets just in May.
Birkin suggests that prediction markets could affect up to 5% of operators' revenues in the US, but he doubts their significant impact. "Blaming prediction markets for a poor World Cup would be dishonest," he adds.
Looking to the Future
As the World Cup nears its conclusion, the biggest challenge for operators is to convert a month-long commitment into long-term loyalty. Beynon observes that operators often see profitability from new clients between 12 and 18 months. Karamitis of DraftKings points out that success will be measured by their ability to maintain customer engagement and adjust their offerings as the event progresses.
With DraftKings' expertise in major sporting events, they remain optimistic about creating value for stakeholders, ensuring a continuous experience for customers.
