Entain's Strategic Approach in Brazil Amid Competitive Pressure
Entain CFO Michael Snape outlines the company's disciplined strategy in Brazil, focusing on maintaining profit rather than chasing growth.

Entain is taking a cautious stance in Brazil, as outlined by CFO Michael Snape, after reporting a 25% decline in net gaming revenue for the first half of 2026. Snape emphasized that Entain, owner of Sportingbet, is not pursuing growth at any cost in a highly competitive market. Despite the drop in revenue, the company remains focused on maintaining profitability.
Market Dynamics and Challenges
The Brazilian market has been described as "intensely competitive and highly promotional" since its regulation of online sports betting and iGaming in January 2025. The lead-up to the World Cup significantly increased spending due to aggressive marketing efforts by competitors. However, Entain has opted for a more disciplined approach.
"We're not chasing growth for growth's sake," Snape stated during a recent analyst call. Entain has continued to concentrate on long-term profitability, leveraging product and pricing strategies that boosted stakes by 10% year-on-year. Sponsorship deals with Palmeiras and Vasco da Gama further strengthen their local presence.
Entain's Strategic Focus
Entain has introduced a new loyalty program and improved its AI-powered betting assistant to enhance player engagement. The London-listed firm stresses that its localized offerings are integral to improving player KPIs and engagement across both sports and gaming.
Competitive Play
Major players like Betano, Bet365, Superbet, Esportes da Sorte, and Flutter's Betnacional have invested heavily in marketing. Yet, Snape highlighted Entain's refusal to invest recklessly, asserting the importance of maintaining Brazil's profit contributions.
Regulatory Environment
The regulatory landscape remains unpredictable. A rise in the tax rate from 12% to 15% by 2028, along with Lula's disapproval of the sector's growth, presents challenges. Bonuses are restricted, with a tax applied on winnings above BRL 2,824 (£404).
Industry expert Ramiro Atucha noted that political factors, including Lula's attempts to ban online casinos, are shaping the regulatory framework. Snape's outlook reflects a realistic view of Brazil's complex environment.
Future Outlook
Looking ahead, Entain sees opportunities for recovery in the second half of the year. However, competition remains fierce, and the company's strategy continues to prioritize wise investment over aggressive spending. Snape concluded, "We will compete, but we will not compete at any cost, maintaining the profit contribution that Brazil gives us."
The Brazilian market presents ample opportunities, but with a need for a careful balance between competitive actions and regulatory compliance, Entain's approach is one of cautious optimism.
