Entain Announces 500 Global Job Cuts Amid Efficiency Drive
Entain PLC plans workforce reductions focusing on corporate functions, clarifying it’s unrelated to UK tax changes.

Entain PLC, the parent company of Ladbrokes and Coral, is set to cut around 500 positions worldwide. The initiative, led by new CFO Michael Snape, targets enhanced efficiency across the group's central corporate areas, including finance, HR, product, and technology.
The company clarified these layoffs aren't a reaction to the recent UK Remote Gambling Duty hike, but part of a broader cost optimization strategy.
"As part of our ongoing focus on enhancing Entain’s operational efficiency and agility, we have begun implementing organisational changes which will regrettably impact a number of roles across the group over the months ahead," said an Entain spokesperson.
Strategic Focus on Efficiency
Entain is engaged in an ongoing effort to boost its operational efficiency. Spokespersons indicated the upcoming changes are meant to strengthen Entain’s business and reinforce a focus on maximizing shareholder value. The company is in consultation with affected employees to offer support during this transition.
External Pressures on the Sector
This announcement comes amid increasing regulatory and fiscal challenges in the UK and other European markets. These challenges include heightened compliance costs, proposed stringent online advertising regulations, and increased betting duties. In April, Entain closed 39 Ladbrokes stores in Ireland, opting to withdraw from a potential sale of its entire retail estate there. A Ladbrokes spokesperson emphasized the focus on competitive sustainability and commitment to operating responsibly in Ireland.
Divestment in CEE Business
Entain will also divest from its Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) operation. It agreed to sell a 20% stake in Entain CEE to EMMA Capital, its joint venture partner. This move aligns with Entain's broader strategic focus to centralize efforts and solidify its market stance.
Market Environment for Entain
The decision to reduce staff numbers reflects ongoing adjustments in response to evolving market demands and regulatory landscapes. Entain continues to adapt its strategy to maintain competitiveness amidst economic pressure and legislative changes.
Supporting Affected Individuals
Entain is committed to supporting employees through these changes. The company emphasizes its goal to redeploy affected staff where possible, maintaining a responsible and sustainable operational footprint. The consultation process prioritizes constructive engagement with employees to mitigate job impact.
Entain’s recent steps highlight a focus on long-term strategic positioning amid challenging industry conditions, aiming to maintain robust operations and focus on core business objectives.
