Macau Approves Expansion of Wynn Palace Despite Drop in VIP Spending

The Government of Macau has approved a 17% expansion of the Wynn Palace integrated casino resort, which includes the construction of a new luxury tower. At the end of the first quarter of the current financial year, Wynn Palace unveiled plans for a 432-room tower. After discussions with the Secretary for Transport and Public Works of Macau, approval was granted for the construction of the new hotel tower, which will increase guest capacity by 25%.

"Wynn Palace operates at nearly full occupancy every night," said Wynn Resorts CEO Craig Billings in May. "With a 99% occupancy, adding new rooms is not speculation."

Construction work is set to begin this year, with project completion scheduled for 2028.

Details of the Wynn Palace Project

The project includes the construction of a theatre with an area of 8,787 square meters and an events center of 23,738 square meters. Billings noted that the Macau market is still "largely VIP-oriented," and the expansion of rooms will meet existing demand that is still being turned away. He also suggested that the expansion could increase the resort's total gaming revenue by $400 million, even though the new tower will not have any gaming areas. Wynn will pay a premium of 650 million patacas, or $80.5 million, for the land lease.

Economic and Weather Challenges

The second quarter of 2026 was marked by a 2.6% decline in VIP gaming revenues compared to the previous year, despite a rise in tourist numbers. Regular gaming revenues also fell by 0.1%, reaching just under $7.6 billion. At the same time, spending on sports lotteries, especially during the 2026 World Cup, rose by 34%.

In addition to football, the typhoon season impacts travel schedules, with Typhoon Noul expected to arrive in Guangdong Province over the weekend. The Macau Health Bureau is also addressing outbreaks of dengue fever and chikungunya, launching additional patrols and mosquito control measures.

Future Prospects for Wynn Palace

Wynn Palace hopes for an improvement in the Macau casino landscape before the completion of the new tower. Meanwhile, the Health Bureau is conducting health checks in risk areas around Wynn Palace and actively collaborating with property managers to monitor the situation.
