Coinbase Strengthens Bitcoin Against Quantum Computer Threats

Coinbase has commenced enhanced protection of its infrastructure against the possible threat of quantum computing. These computers can perform numerous calculations simultaneously, creating a risk to blockchain security by revealing private keys. While such computers do not currently pose an immediate threat, Coinbase believes that preparation must begin now.

"A large-scale quantum computer capable of breaking current cryptography will be built. No one knows exactly when. But the work to prepare must start now, not when it becomes urgent," said Coinbase.

Transitioning to Post-Quantum Cryptography

One of Coinbase’s initiatives is the modernization of its key management system to support post-quantum cryptography. Currently, the CoreKMS system protects approximately 99.9% of the assets owned by Coinbase, utilizing multiparty computation to secure private keys. To prepare for potential threats, the company is developing a version called PQ-CoreKMS.

Quantum Computing Advisory Council

In January 2026, Coinbase created an Independent Advisory Council to explore risks associated with quantum technologies. The council includes leading experts, such as Professor Scott Aaronson and Professor Dan Boneh. The council is confident that a fault-tolerant quantum computer will eventually be built, but standards already exist for developing protective measures.

Supporting the Entire Blockchain Ecosystem

To prepare for a quantum future, Coinbase emphasizes the importance of collaboration on a broader scale. The company will hold working sessions with Bitcoin developers and cryptographers to discuss migration strategies. The decentralized structure of Bitcoin requires coordinated actions, complicating the transition compared to traditional finance.

The company has also become a founding member of the Bitcoin Security Consortium, collaborating with firms such as BlackRock and Fidelity Digital Assets. Through this project, Coinbase will fund developers working on proposals to enhance Bitcoin's security in the context of quantum threats.

"No single company can solve this alone. The only way forward is through collective action by researchers, developers, protocols, and companies," stated Coinbase.
