CME CEO: Some Sports Predictions Are Gambling

Chief Executive Officer of CME Group, Terry Duffy, has stated that some sports prediction markets resemble gambling rather than financial contracts. His comments came after the exchange certified new sports event contracts, expanding its product offerings through partnerships with FanDuel and Crypto.com.

Restrictions in Sports Contracts

CME Group continues to expand its lineup of sports event contracts, but with caution regarding regulation. Duffy emphasized that certain types of contracts, like small parlays, are prone to manipulation and do not meet the standards of regulated financial markets.

"Many of these sports prediction markets are gambling, and I think this issue will eventually end up in the Supreme Court," said Terry Duffy.

Against this backdrop, CME offers a limited set of products, including contracts for tennis, golf, and college football. At the same time, they continue to discuss the boundaries that should be drawn between event contracts and gambling markets.

CME's Position on Prediction Markets

Recently, CME sued the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) over the approval of Kalshi's perpetual bitcoin futures, citing violations of market integrity. Duffy also noted the risks of rapid growth in speculative trading.

Meanwhile, FanDuel Predicts expands its offerings by collaborating with platforms such as Nadex to enter new markets. Flutter aims to improve its sports coverage and enhance its range of combined markets.

CME's Certification of New Contracts

A day before Duffy's statements, CME self-certified new contracts related to professional tennis and football. The exchange stated that these contracts fall under the jurisdiction of the CFTC and comply with all requirements of the Commodity Exchange Act.

Reinforcing its position, CME notes that the selected sporting events have significant financial and economic implications, as well as an appropriate level of oversight against manipulation.

Budgets and the Prediction Market

While CME aims to limit its offerings in sports contracts, FanDuel Predicts continues to expand its product range. The partnership with Nadex allows for contracts to be offered on multiple exchanges regulated by the CFTC.

Executives from both companies recognize differences in priorities, but emphasize the importance of expanding the product line to grow the customer base.
