Greenbrier Faces Acquisition Threat from Omni Hotels

In 2010, the opening of Casino Club helped restore the financial status of the Greenbrier resort after bankruptcy. Now, 16 years later, the owners of the prestigious resort in West Virginia are attempting to refinance nearly $300 million in debt and prevent an acquisition by Omni Hotels.

U.S. Senator Jim Justice, former governor of West Virginia, purchased Greenbrier in 2009. Although the resort is currently generating a small profit, it has a debt of $289.5 million that was due in April. The resort is also facing other financial difficulties, including overdue tax bills.

In April 2026, White Sulphur Springs Holdings, a subsidiary of Omni Hotels, filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking to impose receivership on the resort. In response, the Justice family initiated a state-level lawsuit, claiming that Omni engaged in a 'fraudulent scheme' to seize Greenbrier.

Rescue Strategy and New Investor

Greenbrier's attorneys are asking the courts for time until August 7, 2026, to finalize a $500 million deal with the New York-based investment fund Kennedy Lewis Investment Management. These funds will help settle Omni's debt and cover other obligations. The courts have yet to rule on the requests for deadline extensions.

What Is at Stake for Greenbrier Casino?

Like Greenbrier, Omni's Homestead has gone through financial difficulties and several ownership changes. After its acquisition in 2013, Omni invested $150 million in renovations. Greenbrier has focused on the casino to increase revenue, while Omni has concentrated on family entertainment.

If Omni succeeds in acquiring Greenbrier, the future of Casino Club may be in jeopardy, as Omni does not own any casino resorts. The company's founder, Robert Rowling, along with the family controlling the company, are known for their conservative views, which could impact the casino's fate.

The Rowling family's religious beliefs and their active support of conservative causes may impose restrictions on the continuation of casino operations, as evangelicals traditionally oppose gambling as a social issue.

Casino Correspondent

Сергей Дронов covers the casino industry — slot and live-game releases, mechanics, certification, and the studio-operator deals that shape the lobby shelf. The reports name studios, titles, and markets exactly, with no promotional gloss: what launched, where it is available, and how it differs from the last version. When a provider changes the math of a flagship line or debuts a new live show, Сергей Дронов is first to explain what it means for operators and players.
