Cardinals Scout's Lawyer Denies NFL Betting Allegations

This week, the National Football League (NFL) issued a betting-related suspension for the first time in three years. Ryan Gold, the scouting director of the Arizona Cardinals, was suspended for violating NFL betting policy. The investigation found that Gold allegedly shared confidential information regarding the Cardinals' pick in the 2026 draft. However, Gold's lawyer, Mike Caspino, stated that the allegations are "completely false." The identity of the person who received the insider information has not been disclosed, and it is unclear whether any bets were placed based on this information.

Caspino stated, "We have appealed and hope to restore my client's good name." Despite this, Gold has been temporarily suspended indefinitely.

New Strategy for the Cardinals

Following the release of veteran Kyler Murray, the Cardinals changed their draft strategy. The team selected running back Jeremiah Love from Notre Dame with their third overall pick and also signed quarterback Carson Beck. Throughout the draft, the Cardinals bolstered their roster by adding offensive lineman Chase Bisonte and receiver Reggie Virgil.

Betting Suspicion and Denials

Reports suggest that Gold's wife participated in small $10 bets with friends, but the lawyer claims Gold was unaware of this. In a statement, the NFL urges its employees to strictly adhere to rules prohibiting the disclosure of insider information.

The NFL also stated that, while there are no reasons to believe game integrity has been compromised, the league takes any violations of betting policy seriously.

Possible Coalition to Protect Game Integrity

In light of this case, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver proposed forming a coalition with other leagues to develop best practices for protecting sports integrity. The NFL has not commented on this initiative.

Discussions in the U.S. House of Representatives committee addressed recent betting-related scandals. In 2023, the NFL issued 10 suspensions for violations, including a year-long suspension for a former Indianapolis defender.

Gold has been with the Cardinals for his 13th season and has held the scouting director position since 2025.

The team's training camp begins on Wednesday.
