Magnus Carlsen at the Esports World Cup 2026

At the Esports World Cup 2026, Magnus Carlsen clinched the chess title, securing a second consecutive trophy for Team Liquid. Carlsen finished the tournament undefeated, overcoming Denis Lazavik from AG.AL in two sets during the grand final. According to the event's statement, Lazavik managed to draw four games against Carlsen but could not win in the decisive match.

Carlsen's Domination in the Tournament

Carlsen maintained an impressive performance, remaining undefeated throughout the group stage and playoffs, winning or drawing every game. In the semifinals, he defeated Alireza Firouzja from Team Falcons, repeating the final matchup from the EWC 2025.

On the other hand, 19-year-old Denis Lazavik reached the final after losing one match in the group stage against Hikaru Nakamura from Team Falcons, before defeating Nakamura in the semifinals.

Carlsen's Strategy and Comments

Carlsen explained after the match: "I have played against Denis online many times before, with more risk, and I have paid for it." He added: "I tried not to give him too many obvious positional advantages and to capitalize on every opportunity I found." When asked about critical moments, Carlsen explained: "There were certainly some moments, but I am excited to have remained undefeated; that was, without a doubt, part of my strategy. I did not try to do anything extraordinary, just to play solid chess and take any chance. Not losing speaks to the success of this strategy, and of course, a bit of luck, but I am happy with that."

Third Place Result

In the third place match, Hikaru Nakamura from Team Falcons defeated Alireza Firouzja, also from Team Falcons, with a score of 3-1 in a set of six games. This result secured third place for Falcons and 500 points in the Club Championship.

The event highlighted the skill and consistency of competitors in this high-level eSports environment.
