Poll: New Yorkers Skeptical of Online Sports Betting

A recent poll conducted by the Siena College Research Institute shows that a majority of New York residents consider the legalization of online sports betting an unsuccessful decision. Only 23% of respondents believe that such betting is beneficial for the state. However, 49% of active bettors see a positive aspect in it. Among those who do not bet and individuals over 50, only 14% and 16% feel positively, respectively.

"We are witnessing a generational divide among those who participate in and support sports betting," said Travis Brodbeck, the Deputy Director of Data Management at Siena College.

Online sports betting became legal in New York on January 8, 2022.

Opinions Varied

After its launch, New York quickly took a leading position among states for sports betting. In the fiscal year 2025/2026, ending in March, bettors placed wagers totaling over $26.1 billion, with sportsbooks retaining approximately $2.6 billion in revenue. This led to more than $1.3 billion in tax revenue benefiting education.

Despite the financial benefits for schools, many residents oppose advertising for betting during sporting broadcasts. The poll indicated that 43% of respondents do not wish to see such advertisements on television. Among non-bettors and individuals over 50, this figure reached 45% and 50%, respectively. However, most do not express strong concerns regarding advertising and commentary during games.

"Most bettors are not troubled by TV advertising and commentary during matches," added Brodbeck.

Growth of Online Betting in New York

Despite concerns, the online betting segment in New York continues to grow. In 2025/2026, turnover increased by 9.25% compared to the previous year, while total revenue rose by 21.2%. The New York State Gaming Commission and Attorney General Letitia James warn consumers to avoid participating in sports prediction markets, as they are poorly regulated and do not pay state taxes.

Whether this will become an opportunity for further development of companies and strengthening positions in the industry remains to be seen, but current economic indicators are optimistic.
